Sound of Freedom outpaced the music documentary Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour at the domestic box office last year, also putting it among the 10 highest-grossing films in 2023.

The Angel Studios film, which details the true story of Tim Ballard leaving his job at the Department of Homeland Security to combat human trafficking among children, earned over $184 million in North America. Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, meanwhile, earned just under $180 million.

Both films made their way into the top 10 highest-grossing films released in 2023, with Sound of Freedom in ninth place and The Eras Tour right behind it. However, when including the $283 million that Avatar: The Way of Water made in 2023, which was released in late 2022, Sound of Freedom edges out the music documentary to remain in the top 10.

The new film Sound of Freedom highlights the child trafficking crisis as the true story of federal agent Tim Ballard, who saves a seven-year-old boy and then answers the call to find his sister, is detailed. Ballard’s character is played by Jim Caviezel from The Passion of the Christ.

The highest-grossing film in North America last year was Barbie, which made over $636 million. Following Barbie are The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and Oppenheimer.

Globally, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour just outpaced Sound of Freedom by about $2 million, with the former film earning over $250 million worldwide and the latter film earning over $248 million across the globe.

Sound of Freedom was released in theaters on July 4 last year and ended up being a surprise hit at the box office. The film was released on Blu-Ray on Nov. 14.
